Stress Boosts Cholesterol

Evidence increasingly shows that the mind and body are linked, and that seems to be true when it comes to controlling (or not controlling) cholesterol levels. Researchers at University College, London gave 199 middle-aged men and women mental challenges, asked afterwards how stressed they felt, then measured their blood cholesterol. Three years later their cholesterol was checked again. Those who reported being most easily unhinged by the tasks had higher levels of LDL cholesterol three years out. One possible explanation: extra fats surge into the blood during stress responses, so people who are frequently stressed experience this most. To tame excess tension, consider taking up yoga or meditation, or just make time for more hot baths and quiet reflection.
