In her book, Healthy Living from the Inside Out, actress Mariel Hemingway identifies the four cornerstones of a balanced life: food, exercise, silence and home. Of these four essential elements, it’s food or more specifically learning how to eat wisely and well that may be the most challenging change, says Mariel. It’s not because we don’t care about food…we’re obsessed with it,” she says. “But we’re mainly obsessed with how to stop eating so much of it, not how to eat smart.” Eating smart means upping consumption of whole foods, which are basically foods harvested in their most natural, unprocessed state and curtailing the amount of “noisy” foods you consume. “Noisy foods are high in sugar, chemicals and caffeine,” says Mariel who kicked her own sugar and caffeine addiction years ago. She confesses that she occasionally overdoses on green tea but that slip is in keeping with her philosophy.
“One thing I point out is that no one is perfect,” she says. “And there is no ‘wrong’ way to follow the program in the book. “ You make a choice, then you see how it makes you feel, and if necessary, you move on to another choice or add another element,” she says.
Mariel is adding other elements to her wellness empire. She’s working on a green cookbook. She’s the paid spokesperson for Healthy Curb, a food-based supplement that curbs the appetite. In early 2009, she hopes to launch Mariel’s Kitchen, a food company (www.marielskitchen.com). Her fans have been pleading with her to post the recipe for Blisscuits, her trademark cookies made from almonds, coconut, almond meal, coconut oil, and cinnamon and without sugar or flour.
She promises the cookies will be the first release from Mariel’s Kitchen because, she says, we all need a sweet now and then.
