Want to reduce your cholesterol level and your calorie intake while improving your insulin response? It’s as simple as having a healthy breakfast first thing in the morning. That’s the conclusion of researchers at the University of Nottingham in England, who found that when healthy women skipped breakfast for two weeks they had increases in total and “bad” LDL cholesterol, and poorer insulin sensitivity, compared to a two-week period when they ate breakfast every morning. In addition, when the women had breakfast daily, they not only lowered their cholesterol but took in 100 fewer calories a day than they did when they skipped breakfast. This was a short-term study, so further studies are needed. However, researchers suspect that breakfast-skipping women could be at risk for weight gain and heart disease due to the extra calories consumed and elevated cholesterol levels.
