Doctors have long said that women who take vitamin D and calcium are
healthier than those who are deficient in the minerals. It now looks
like the two nutrients can help cut the risk of developing type 2
diabetes as well. In a 20-year study, women with no history of diabetes
were examined every 2 to 4 years to evaluate their intake of vitamin D
and calcium from foods and supplements. Researchers found that most
women were not getting enough of either nutrient, but among those
taking vitamin D supplements there was a 13 percent reduction in the
risk of diabetes. And among women with the highest calcium intake, the
risk fell 21 percent.
